What does it mean to reinvent yourself?
Firstly before we go any further, let us address what it means to reinvent yourself and the steps it entails. The process of reinventing yourself is not an overnight task.
Reinvention is a journey, more mental than anything, and those brave enough to embark on it only wish they had started sooner.
Tapping into our authentic selves and examining where we are currently in life is a huge part of the process. Being open and honest about our shortcomings and the things we would like to see manifest differently in our lives starts now.
Regarding reinvention, it’s a take all or nothing venture. There is no cap age limit or point in your life where you cannot start the process of reinvention.
The reinvention process is all about learning. Allowing yourself to learn something daily is what we all should strive to incorporate.
At any point in your life, when you feel what is going on around you or within you is no longer serving you, it’s time to take steps toward making positive changes that will benefit you long term.
Remember, discovering what makes you happy is vital in this journey, so allow yourself the freedom to explore your passions, dreams, and interests that you may have put on the back burner over the years.
Is it Possible to Reinvent Yourself?
December 2018 was one of the worst times in my life to date. I was working a dead-end job, had no money, and went through a breakup, all while battling depression.
If I can be honest, I had thrown in the towel, to say the least. Going through that experience, I knew something had to change. I was at my wit’s end. Oftentimes I was sick of spinning around on the hamster wheel, going nowhere fast.
So it started I began harboring anger at myself and the world. Beating myself up for the slightest indiscretion. Then only to repeat this vicious cycle day in and day out.
I knew things had to get better, or at least I hoped they would get better. You know what they say, all talk, and no action gets you nowhere in life.
So slowly, I began making minor changes to my life that started to snowball into more significant changes, leading to my journey of reinvention and self-discovery.
Why do you need to reinvent yourself?
Change is inevitable. Whether we welcome it with open arms or fear it like the plague. It will happen in some way, shape, or form, which is natural with being human. No one wants to have the same mindset or beliefs they held at fifteen when they are forty.
Reinvention is all about growing and having a growth mindset. As you progress in life, outgrowing things, people, and situations will occur. These changes are okay and should motivate you to keep moving forward.
Where do you see yourself in five years? Even ten years from now? These are questions you need to ask yourself. How is the happiest version of yourself leading their lives?
These questions should spark some fire within. Seek how to reinvent yourself if you are not living authentically to your true self.
5 Easy Steps to Reinvent Yourself Successfully
1. Social Media Detox
The first thing I did was give social media a break. Now I know what you’re saying. Do a social media break? Yes, a social media break. Trust me, it works. In the beginning, it was tough but a necessary process.
I started slowly by restricting how many times a day I checked social media and stretched the times farther and farther apart until I could go more than a day without using social media.
Your social media detox can be as long or as short as you see fit for your lifestyle. Scrolling Instagram and Facebook for countless hours only made me sadder and, if I am being entirely honest, angry.
Here I was looking at other people’s lives, getting job promotions, proposals, weddings, and baby announcements while watching from the sidelines.
I wasn’t taking any action towards accomplishing goals for my life in real-time. Putting the phone down helped give me clarity and a fresh perspective.
I wasn’t beating myself up by comparing my chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 10. Focusing on myself helped me realize what I wanted out of my life and what I needed to do to get there.
2. Write down your goals
This newfound perspective on life led to the second step, which is writing down your goals. Acknowledging the goals you would like to accomplish for yourself is critical in reinvention.
As I began my journey, I started writing down my goals in a journal. Putting your goals down on paper allows you to track and monitor your progress.
So what’s the purpose of goal setting? And Why is it so important, anyways, you ask? Goal setting gives you the power to take a dream, put some action behind it and make it a reality.
Getting into a goal-setting mindset should be something you take your time with so you do not become overwhelmed.
Begin with smaller goals like waking up one hour earlier or making the bed every day before leaving your room. As you accomplish these small tasks, you will see your confidence improve.
As you see yourself crushing these small goals, your mindset will shift. You are now at a point where you will want to start setting more ambitious goals.
3. Set Daily Intentions
So up until this point in your life, you have been navigating the world with little to no purpose or direction. The buck stops here.
It is time to take full reign over your life and take responsibility for being your life’s main character. Setting daily intentions will help you live more purposefully.
It will help you understand why you are doing what you are doing in the first place. What goal are you going to work on today? What steps are you going to take?
Getting up in the mornings will have more meaning now. You are making a conscious effort to work hard and get closer to being that person you have always envisioned.
4. Read more
Reading is the gateway to all other knowledge. As we have already discussed, learning is a lifelong process, and incorporating reading into this equation is necessary.
Now I’m not saying you must become a literary expert and read a book from cover to cover. However, it would help if you began reading things that motivated you to work towards accomplishing your goals.
Reading here and there on a topic that interests you and adds value to your life has never hurt anyone. Reading is a form of self-care that helps us reinvent ourselves and break old habits.
Plus, it’s free. You can go to any library or the internet to find material like you are doing right now by reading this article.
Knowledge is power, and when people are knowledgeable, they make better decisions for themselves while expanding their perspective on life.
5. Give Yourself Grace
As you reinvent yourself, get rid of the old, and improve with the new, you must be patient with yourself. Trying to change old habits is not an easy thing.
Remembering to give yourself grace will help you along your process. Giving yourself grace can take many forms but be mindful that you are human and intentionally trying to make a better way for yourself is important.
Failure is such an ugly word. However, it is a reality. You may attempt and fail to reinvent yourself many times before you get to where you want to be, and know that is okay.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are we. Real change takes time, so remember to go easy on yourself when things get hard.
Start reinventing yourself
