What is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?
According to the Mayo Clinic, Hidradenitis Suppurativa is a condition that causes small, painful lumps to form under the skin. The lumps usually develop in areas where your skin rubs together, such as armpits, groin, buttocks, and breasts.
One of the most important things for someone with this skin condition is ensuring they are adequately cleaning their skin to avoid infection.

Thank you for making this list! I’m currently navigating how to live with HS at 36. It’s hard to describe, no one talks about it and some doctors aren’t the best with dealing with it when it’s in private areas. It must have been difficult at such a young age. I applaud your strength.
Hi Jen,
It was extremely confusing, and I felt shame for so many years not knowing what was going on with my body. Trial and error have been the biggest learning curve for me. I am working on an E-book about my HS journey and things I have learned thus far. Once completed, I’m going to get it up on the website here. Kudos to you as well as you brave your journey. No one can truly understand unless they experience it firsthand. Some things that have been key for me are avoiding traditional deodorant that clogs your pores and, opting for a more natural option and also keeping stress down, and keeping a balanced diet and Hiblcens is the best soap for HS wish I would have known about it as a youth. – Thank you for taking the time to read the post.
Hi, I am 43 years old and just got diagnosed with this skin disorder that I have been dealing with since puberty. Unfortunately, I think my youngest daughter has it also because she has been experiencing the same symptoms that I have been experiencing and for her it too started after puberty. Thank You for making this list it will be helpful in both of our journey with this condition. I was also wondering if you could send me a list of deodorants and what kind of diet has seem to help keep the flare ups down, please. This is all new for me and I am overwhelmed. Also do you still shave armpit and groin areas or is it better to get it lasered off? So afraid to shave now. I used to think they were just hair bumps but now that I know what they are I am scared to shave but am also tired of being hairy. Sorry for the overshare but not sure of what to do. My dermatologist has put me on oral medication as well as topical antibiotics, but I was just wondering what more can I do to help me and my daughter. Thank You for taking the time out to read my email and I wish you the best.
Hi Kenndy,
I totally understand. Yes, toss those mainstream deodorant’s right now. All they do is clog our pores and keep the skin congested. Yes, I too suffer from HS in the armpit and groin area and when I stopped using the traditional deodorant it helped so much. There are a few options out there that I really like the Thai Crystal Mist Natural Deodorant Spray, Kosa Chemistry Deodorant, Salt & Stone and Necessaire to name a few in which you can purchase off of Amazon. A tip I use is if I am using a stick, I will purchase two one for the left/right armpit, so I don’t have to worry about cross contamination. As far as diet I have found that when I am eating like crap (a lot of sugar and processed foods) I tend to see more swelling in those areas so When I cut those out it reduces the inflammation in my body, and they are not as significant or painful. Also reducing stress as much as possible helps too. As for shaving once upon a time because my skin was so congested I had no hair under my armpits but once I stopped using the traditional deodorants and began properly caring for my skin hair did grow back so I decided to shave because I am deeper in complexion I opted for shaving versus laser treatment because of the complications that come along with damaging and darkening the skin in those with darker skin tones so for shaving I will first exfoliate, cleanse the skin with Hibicleanse Antimicrobial Soap which you can also find on Amazon or CVS/Walgreens/Walmart and I will use the Gillette Venus Razor collection for pubic hair because that razor is very good as well as the shaving cream that goes with it. I am planning to do a whole series on this condition I am sorry for my tardiness, but I hope you return and learn more. My best to you and your daughter just know you are not alone, and we have a whole community out here.
